Just two rounds in, and already the battle between champion Daniel Cormier and challenger Alexander Gustafsson had become a brutal war of attrition. In round two Gustafsson had found his answer to the wrestling with which Cormier had taken round one, employing a sharp takedown game of his own in conjunction with career-best combination punching to slow the stout wrestler down. His moment of tactical clarity was quickly subdued, however, when Cormier opted to employ his wrestling in a more brute manner, repeatedly hanging onto the Swede's neck with one hand while pummeling him with the other.
