Perhaps the most exciting event in Bellator’s recent history was the Heavyweight World Grand Prix Tournament. The heavyweight tournament solved a big problem. The heavyweight title had been vacated by Vitaly Minakov in 2016 and hadn’t been defended since 2014. With the title out in no man’s land, the heavyweight division was in dire straits. Scott Coker and company devised a plan to rejuvenate interest in the heavyweight division and it sure did work. Coker called on legends of MMA like Fedor Emilianenko, Chael Sonnen, and Frank Mir, and formed the 8-man heavyweight tournament—the winner, earning the Bellator Heavyweight Championship.
