The WBA super welterweight championship bout between Erislandy Lara and Delvin Rodriguez is officially a go, as both combatants cleared the 154-pound limit. Their duel, which anchors the Premier Boxing Champions card on Spike TV Friday night, will be for Lara’s title and is scheduled for 12 rounds.
Rodriguez (28-7-4, 16 KOs), a Dominican Republic native living in Connecticut, was first to climb aboard the scale. Set to fight for the third time in an attempt at a major world title, Rodriguez cleared all the hurdles and clocked in at 153.4 pounds. Rodriguez previously fell short at world title bids twice; once for the vacant IBF welterweight belt against Isaac Hlatshwayo and a few years later versus Austin Trout for the very same title Lara now owns.
