The Brazilian welterweight was looking to bounce back from a couple of decision losses at UFC Fight Night 110 on June 10, but the promotion announced Thursday night that Alves was forced out of a fight with Kiichi Kunimoto due to an injury.
"I injured my arm and I can’t fight,” Alves told MMA Fighting. "I won’t need to undergo surgery, only physical therapy and some time off to recover the arm.”
Alves has no timetable for his return just yet, but doesn’t expect to be sidelined for more than two months.
"I was happy with the fight, I wanted to fight in New Zealand against a tough opponent, but God knows what He does,” said Alves, who was replaced by Zak Ottow.
