With Floyd Mayweather Jr. fighting Conor McGregor at the contracted weight of 154-pounds, I figured it would make sense to highlight one of Mayweather’s few appearances at the weight class. On May 5th, 2012, Floyd took on Puerto Rican star Miguel Cotto (current record: 40-5, 33 KOs) for Cotto’s WBA junior middleweight crown. Cotto’s best years (and his 5’7” and 67” frame) were at 140 and 147 pounds, but he’d managed to win a title at 154, setting up this monstrous pay-per-view clash.
By Mayweather standards, this was one of his tougher fights. While there’s not really an argument for a Cotto win, the bout wasn’t as one-sided as the scorecards (118-110, 117-111, 117-111) may suggest.
