Stephen Thompson took another key step toward a UFC welterweight title shot by taking out a former No. 1 contender in enemy territory.
“Wonderboy” cruised to a five-round verdict over Rory MacDonald in the UFC Fight Night Ottawa headliner at TD Place Arena on Saturday night. The karate specialist was rarely threatened during their 25 minutes in the cage, as he controlled the striking range and perplexed “The Red King,” who was coming off a classic battle against Robbie Lawler last summer.
Lawler may very well be next for Thompson, but the reigning champion has business of his own to handle next month before any other matchmaking can occur.
