Thursday night’s 3-0 victory over Independiente in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League quarter-finals gave Sporting Kansas City a 4-2 aggregate win and secured them a first-ever appearance in the CCL semi-finals, where they will face Monterrey.
Despite coming away with what looked like a comfortable victory on the night, it was anything but for Peter Vermes’ side as they had to wait until the 74th minute for Krisztian Nemeth’s opener thanks to some inspired goalkeeping from Jose Guerra. However, once the first goal went in, the floodgates opened with Nemeth getting his second of the night after Roger Espinoza bagged himself a well-earned goal.
