2019 was not the season that Sporting Kansas City hoped for. They slumped to an 11th-placed finish just a year on from topping the Western Conference in 2018, the biggest drop-off throughout the league. In fact, their 2019 campaign was so bad, it was the first time they have finished lower than 13th in the entire league, as they came home in 21st in the Supporters’ Shield standings.
SKC did make the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Champions League but suffered a horrific 10-2 aggregate defeat to Monterrey in the last four. Injuries ravaged much of their season, and after a slow start scuppered their progress, Peter Vermes’ team was never able to recover.
