Sleeping in St. Louis: MLS expansion not dead here yet

Dead. Evaporated. Other dismal words saturated reports after voters defeated funds for a 22,000-stadium that would have moved St. Louis up in the MLS expansion race.

Truthfully, supporters can quote Mark Twain after he read his obituary in 1897, “The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.”

Brian Straus for Sports Illustrated’s Planet Futbol examined the same evidence I did after the vote earlier this week and came to a similar conclusion.

Straus on St. Louis: “The outcome is neither a repudiation of soccer in St. Louis or of MLS.”

The exit of the NFL, leaving an empty stadium, played a visible role in the negative vote, according to multiple media reports.
