The San Jose Earthquakes missed out on the playoffs on the final day of the campaign after losing to the Portland Timbers, ending the regular season in 8th place in the Western Conference, four points below the red line. It was the ninth time in twelve seasons that the side had failed to make it into the postseason since their two-year-hiatus from the league in 2006-2007.
The club is still awaiting its first piece of silverware since the 2003 MLS Cup, and once again, the Earthquakes failed in the U.S. Open Cup as they could only reach the round of 16 before they were beaten by Los Angeles FC.
