Though it went better than last season’s opener, Minnesota United were still outclassed by a San Jose Earthquakes squad who barely snuck into the playoffs last season. There is work to be done. The Loons may not have the talent right now to be a playoff team, but they are better than they showed for the first 70 minutes in San Jose. If they show the fight and intensity they showed in the dying minutes against the Earthquakes, they could certainly surprise some clubs until the summer transfer window, when they will hopefully receive some help in the form of incoming transfers.
