Here are 3 key takeaways from Minnesota United’s 1-1 draw with the Philadelphia Union at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
A controversial call
After Union defender Oguchi Onyewu (yes, he’s still playing) appearanced to commit a handball in Minnesota’s 18-yard box, a penalty was given, and Onyewu was given a second yellow, and was sent off. However, the newly-implemented VAR (Video Assistant Referee) reviewed the play, and determined that Loons defender Michael Boxall made contact with Onyewu, which pushed him into the ball. The penalty was called back, and the Red card was rescinded.
Despite the VAR ruling, many around the league thought that the penalty still should have been given, as it was soft contact, and Onyewu shouldn’t have had his hand in the air, anyway.
