The turnaround caught momentum Saturday when the Houston Dynamo drew New York City FC 1-1 in an away game. They stayed in seventh place, just below the Western Conference MLS playoffs line, but the Dynamo players and coaches found the strategy that gains them a post-season chance.

Houston Dynamo Strategy

The strategy includes the unexpected. NYCFC expected some version of the Houston Dynamo 4-3-3 last weekend. They got a 4-2-3-1 formation for most of the game. They saw a different mix of personnel on the field as well, led by F Mauro Manotas up front.

Later a revitalized Eric Alexander subbed onto the field for 38 meaningful minutes.
