Atlanta United are the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup champions. The Five Stripes, playing in their second cup final in as many weeks, also grabbed their second trophy in as many tries. They are the 63rd club to win the United States’ oldest soccer trophy and the first club to do so from the state of Georgia.
It was a wild final, with Atlanta scoring early and often. Leandro Gonzalez Pirez forced the opening goal while attempting to cross the ball into the box. It took an unfortunate deflection off Minnesota United defender Chase Gasper and floated up over goalkeeper Vito Mannone for a fluky goal.
