Game 1 of the 2017 World Series is in the books and I’m not sure what was hotter: the triple-digit temperature at Dodger Stadium, or Clayton Kershaw’s pitching.
The Astros started the game with 3 up and 3 down, with Kershaw retiring the side. Chris Taylor, batting in the 1-slot for the Dodgers, got things going early when he hit a first pitch home run. Alex Bregman of the Astros answered with a home run of his own in the top of the 2nd.
It was a pitcher’s battle until the bottom of the 6th, when Dallas Keuchel gave up a two-out walk. Justin Turner took advantage and hit a 2-run homerun to give the Dodgers a 3-1 lead.
Astros made a pitching change in the bottom of the 7th, bringing in Brad Peacock, who immediately put a runner on base with a walk. The Astros escaped the inning, leaving two Dodgers runners stranded after a flyout to center field. Clayton Kershaw left the game top of the 8th, finishing with 11 strikeouts over seven complete innings.
At the top of the 9th, The Dodgers brought in their closer, Kenley Jansen, who went on to end the inning by retiring all three batters he faced and collecting the save.
Game 2 is Wednesday in Los Angeles. First pitch is set for 8:09 p.m ET.
