The Texas Rangers need outfield depth for the season’s stretch run as Josh Hamilton deals with a lingering knee injury, and they acquired some Tuesday in the form of Will Venable.
Corey Brock of MLB.com noted the San Diego Padres traded Venable to the Rangers in exchange for catcher Marcus Greene Jr. Greene is only 21 years old, but he also underwent Tommy John surgery in June, per MLB.com.
According to Jeff Wilson of the Fort-Worth Star Telegram, Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said the health of both Hamilton and Leonys Martin played a role in the trade:
Josh Hamilton's iffy knee and Leonys Martin's hand injury factored into decision to trade for Will Venable, #Rangers GM Jon Daniels said.
