KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The father of Edinson Volquez, the starting pitcher for the Kansas City Royals in Game 1 of the World Series, died Tuesday in the Dominican Republic, a family source told ESPNdeportes.com.
The source said Daniel Volquez, 63, died of heart complications. The pitcher heard the news on his way to Kauffman Stadium.
Nonetheless, at 6:50 p.m. CT, as scheduled, Volquez went out to the bullpen to warm up with catcher Salvador Perez to face the New York Mets in the first game of the Fall Classic.
