IT WAS A JOURNEY that was never intended to be a quest. Life simply turned it into one -- life, plus a single motivating sentence from the most influential of voices, assisted by a dose of divinity.

One day nearly 20 years ago, Vera Clemente, widow of the legendary Roberto Clemente, entered the studio of photographer Duane Rieder before the 2006 All-Star Game, to be played at Pittsburgh's PNC Park. The studio had once been an old firehouse -- Pittsburgh's Engine No. 25 -- situated in the Lawrenceville section of the city.
