Red Sox pick up Clay Buchholz's option for 2016 season

Clay Buchholz’s injury-shortened 2015 season wasn’t enough to scare away the Boston Red Sox.

The Red Sox announced Tuesday that they’ve exercised Buchholz’s contract option for the 2016 season. Previous reports have indicated the option is worth $13 million.

Buchholz was limited to 18 starts in 2015 because of a right elbow injury. The right-hander made his final start of the season July 10 against the New York Yankees and finished the campaign with a 7-7 record and a 3.26 ERA over 113 1/3 innings.

Buchholz, who turned 31 in August, has battled several injuries throughout his nine-year career, preventing him from ever making more than 29 starts or topping 189 1/3 innings in a single season.
