The San Diego Padres placed rookie shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a strained left hamstring.
The move was made retroactive to Monday. Right-hander Phil Maton was recalled from Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding move.
Tatis left Sunday's game against the Washington Nationals in the bottom of the 10th inning after he did an awkward-looking split while trying to stretch for a throw at second base. He was unable to keep his foot on the bag on the play. He moved around gingerly while umpires reviewed the play and could not continue.
