Despite doubts over the big-league record, Ichiro takes the hits crown with much more to go.

A perfect game, a grand slam, and a big strikeout are all elements that make baseball America’s favorite pastime. An infield hit, not nearly as grand of a gesture, is seldom celebrated at the same magnitude. In a game between the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres, however, the celebrations began as Ichiro Suzuki’s lead-off infield single tied the record for most professional hits with 4,256, matching Pete Rose’s career total.
