ESPN's Gordon Edes reported the Red Sox have ruled Betts' injury a sprained back.

Betts remained in the game for one more out to conclude the top of the second, but Rusney Castillo replaced him in center field, and Alejandro De Aza replaced him in the lineup.

Betts converted from second base to the outfield last season, and he has served primarily as Boston's starting center fielder in 2015.
