Even though Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo wasn't disciplined by Major League Baseball for sliding into San Diego Padres catcher Austin Hedges on Monday, he did violate MLB's collision rule on the play.
Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan reported MLB told all 30 teams Tuesday that Rizzo violated the rule but opted against punishing him because it didn't believe he intended to hurt Hedges.
The play occurred in the bottom of the sixth inning with the Cubs trailing 2-1. Rizzo tagged up and attempted to score from third base on a fly ball off the bat of Kris Bryant to Padres center fielder Matt Szczur, whose throw beat the first baseman by plenty.
