Mets' Wright has surgery, out 'quite a while'

NEW YORK -- New York Mets third baseman David Wright will undergo surgery on Thursday to address a herniated disk in his neck. Dr. Robert Watkins will perform the procedure in Marina deal Rey, California.

The 33-year-old Wright initially tried rest, rehab and anti-inflammatory injections to address the painful neck issue.

Watkins already had been treating Wright for chronic spinal stenosis in his lower back.

"After trying every way to get back on the field, I've come to realize that it's best for me, my teammates and the organization to proceed with surgery at this time," Wright said in a statement.
