Late Marlins ace Jose Fernandez has been named the National League Comeback Player of the Year for the 2016 season.
The award was voted on by players days before Fernandez’s death in a boating accident that also killed two friends on September 25. He was 24, making him the youngest MLB All-Star ever to die.
Fernandez, a native of Cuba, returned from Tommy John surgery to post a 2.86 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 253 strikeouts in 29 starts.
Toxicology reports later revealed Fernandez had alcohol and cocaine in his system the night he died.
