Encarnacion drops appeal, takes one-game ban

TORONTO -- Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion has dropped his appeal of a one-game suspension for making contact with umpire Vic Carapazza and will sit out Toronto's final game before the All-Star break Sunday against the Detroit Tigers.

An All-Star for the third time this season, Encarnacion is hitting .267 with a team-high 23 home runs. He leads the majors with 80 RBIs.

He was suspended for bumping Carapazza's shoulder after being ejected after the first inning in Toronto's 19-inning loss to the Cleveland Indians on July 1. Encarnacion was upset for being called out on strikes to end the inning, the third Blue Jays batter of the inning to strike out looking.
