Dodgers' Freddie Freeman Steps Away from Team amid 3-Year-Old Son's Hospitalization

Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman has left the team's road trip to rejoin his family at home after his three-year-old son, Maximus, was hospitalized after contracting transient synovitis.

"Emotionally it's been certainly hard for him," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters (h/t Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic) on Friday before his team's road game against the Houston Astros. "He needs to be with his family."

Freeman's wife, Chelsea Freeman, revealed in an Instagram story Wednesday that Maximus contracted transient synovitis, which is caused by "inflammation (swelling) of the lining of the hip joint," per the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne.
