Cy Young Award hopeful Chris Sale was not listed on the Atlanta Braves' roster ahead of Tuesday night's Wild Card Series-opening game against the San Diego Padres.
Bryce Elder and AJ Smith-Shawver, both listed, are two top candidates to get the Game 1 start according to MLB.com's Mark Bowman.
Sale was a late scratch due to back spasms ahead of Monday's Game 2 in a must-win doubleheader against the New York Mets.
Manager Brian Snitker indicated after the Braves' win that the team did not expect Sale to be available for the Padres series, per Bowman.
