There's a decent chance that between now and their 2022 season opener against the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium on Thursday, the New York Yankees will beat Aaron Judge's self-imposed deadline and sign him to a contract extension.
It's not necessarily the wrong thing to do, but it's telling that it's not exactly hard to see how such a thing could go wrong.
If nothing else, it would be a risky contract by default. If Judge, who's 29 years old and due for free agency after this season, has his way, it'll be long enough to make him a "Yankee for life.
