According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports, Russell hurt himself "sliding somewhat awkwardly" into third base on a triple in the fourth inning. The team said the shortstop was removed for tightness in his left hamstring.
The slide was headfirst, and Bob Nightengale of USA Today called Russell's injury "a huge blow" for the Cubs.
