Friday is the 30th anniversary of Roger Clemens’ becoming the first major league pitcher to strike out 20 in a nine-inning game. He achieved it for the Boston Red Sox, his first major league team, in a 3-1 win against the Seattle Mariners on April 29, 1986.
Below, we recall that night and some of the noteworthy stats surrounding Clemens' performance.
At the time of the game, Clemens also tied the American League record for consecutive strikeouts in a game with eight, a mark broken by Doug Fister in 2012.
Attendance at Fenway Park in Boston that night was 13,414.
