Denard Span Glad To Be Home
Denard Span was traded on Wednesday from the San Fransisco Giants to the Tampa Bay Rays. Span told Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times that he's happy to be playing for the Rays, in his hometown of Tampa Bay.
"I always thought it would be cool to play here during the latter part of my career" said Span.
The 33-year-old outfielder is owed $11 million in 2018 with a $12 million club option (or $4 million buyout) for 2019. He hit .268/.330/.402 with 23 home runs and stole 24 bases over 272 games in San Francisco.
Shohei Ohtani Says Goodbye
On Monday, Japanese baseball star Shohei Ohtani said goodbye to his former team the Nippon Ham Fighters. He threw one final ceremonial pitch from the Sapporo Dome mound during the farewell ceremony.
The 23-year-old was signed by the Los Angeles Angels earlier this month and met with many MLB teams before picking the Angels as his new home.
Despite being limited with foot injuries, he hit.332/.403/.540 with eight home runs and 35 RBIs in 65 games last season. Ohtani hopes to hit and pitch in the majors, which the Angels are expected to allow him to do. He is 41-15 with a 2.56 ERA in his career as a pitcher in Japan.
Red Sox Interested In Manny Machado
Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado is one of the hottest tickets available since the Orioles announced he was available this offseason. Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports the Red Sox remain interested in Machado but haven't "moved the needle" in talks with the Orioles.
The Sox infield isn't in desperate need of a third baseman with Rafael Devers there for now. On the season Devers batted .284 with 10 home runs, and 34 RBI in 58 games. He also played well in the ALDS where he posted a .364/.429/.909 line.
