The MLB winter meetings start Sunday, which means the MLB rumor mill is buzzing with potential signings, targets and trades. The MLB offseason has already seen two of the biggest names switch teams (Shohei Ohtani signing with the Angels and Giancarlo Stanton joining the Yankees via trade), but there's still plenty of big names out there. Here are all the latest MLB rumors you need to know.
Red Sox Want Jose Abreu
The Red Sox want another power bat and that's led them to have talks with the White Sox about Jose Abreu, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. While Abreu would be an incredible fit for Boston, it doesn't mean a trade while happen. As the White Sox have shown time and time again, they'll only deal players for a strong return of prospects. That will remain the case for Abreu.
"The White Sox won’t let Abreu go cheaply, according to team sources," Cafardo writes. "In fact, they may not let him go at all. Just as they held out for top prospects in the Sale deal, as well as the Adam Eaton deal with the Nationals, they’re going to demand a lot for their best hitter, one of the few consistent power hitters in the game."
If the Red Sox can't land Abreu, Cafardo reports players like Eric Hosmer, J.D. Martinez, Mike Moustakas and even Wil Myers could options.
Brewers Could Shop Ryan Braun
Cafardo also reports the Brewers could entertain dealing away star OF Ryan Braun. This is far from the first time Braun has been mentioned in trade rumors, as Milwaukee has fielded offers for several years. The issue, as has been the case, with dealing Braun is his massive contract and no-trade clause. Factor in that the 34-year-old OF is coming off a down year (in part because of injuries) and it seems unlikely he'll be dealt in the offseason.
Giants Targeting Third Basemen
After an awful season, the San Francisco Giants are looking to put themselves back in the playoff mix with a big offseason. Cafardo reports the Giants will target third basemen Mike Moustakas and Todd Frazier. Moustakas would be more expensive for the Giants, although he is younger and a California native. If the Giants add Moustakas, who received a qualifying offer, it would cost the Giants their second and fifth highest draft picks, plus $1 million in international bonus pool money.
