The MLB season is roughly two months old now, but there have already been several surprises this season. The Chicago Cubs - the consensus preseason title favorite - are barely over .500, yet they are just one of a handful of teams that are surprisingly struggling. On the flip side, there have also been plenty of pleasant surprises, like the Yankees hot start and the Rockies leading the NL West.
How does every team in the league stack up at the quarter point of the season? Here's our latest MLB Power Rankings:
30) San Diego Padres (16-30)
We knew that San Diego was going to struggle this year, and that has been the case. They've lost 14 of their last 18 games, and things don't seem to be getting better anytime soon.
29) Miami Marlins (15-28)
Miami was 10-8 at one point this season - they're winning just 20 percent of their games over the past month.
28) Philadelphia Phillies (15-26)
Philly is another team that's in an absolute tailspin, going 4-17 over their last 21 games. We knew this group had some growing to do, but this stretch - after such a promising start - is brutal.
27) Kansas City Royals (18-25)
The Royals still have a great pitching staff, but their offense has been M.I.A. all season. It's looking more and more like Kansas City will have a firesale at the deadline
26) Atlanta Braves (18-23)
Atlanta has gone through their ups and downs all season to this point, and that's something that's going to continue for the rest of the year. They just aren't all that experienced.
25) New York Mets (18-24)
The Mets have been an absolute trainwreck off the field this year (we don't need to dive into all of that), but their on-field play has been killed by injuries to key players. Until they get healthy, they're just going to have to hope they can keep their season afloat.
24) Pittsburgh Pirates (20-24)
The Pirates have won six of their last eight games to get themselves out of the gutter, and upcoming series against the Mets, Marlins and Braves should help them move even higher up this list.
23) Oakland A's (20-24)
Oakland has won four of their last six games, but that comes on the heels of a 1-6 stretch. Still, they're a young group with upside.
22) Toronto Blue Jays (19-26)
The Blue Jays are no longer the dumpster fire they were in the first few weeks of the season, playing roughly .500 ball of late. However, they still have a huge hole they need to dig themselves out of.
21) San Francisco Giants (19-26)
San Francisco is finally starting to show signs of life after an absolutely terrible start to the season, winning seven of their last nine games.
20) Cincinnati Reds (20-23)
Cincinnati went on a seven-game losing streak that sent them crashing back down the standings, and that came just a few weeks after a 1-8 stretch. It appears this fall down the standings will only continue.
19) Seattle Mariners (20-25)
Despite their multitude of injuries, the Mariners have stayed relevant - but they're hoping a 3-9 mark in their last 12 games isn't a sign of things to come.
18) Chicago White Sox (20-22)
Chicago has the second-youngest lineup in the American, so the fact they're this close to .500 tells you a lot about how good this team will eventually be. Right now, they're struggling with consistency.
17) Los Angeles Angels (23-23)
Mike Trout is doing everything he can to carry the Angels this season. When will he finally get some consistent help?
16) Tampa Bay Rays (23-23)
Tampa Bay continues to outperform expectations this season, and that's largely because of how they've gotten contributions from what feels like everyone on the roster at every position. How much longer will they continue to play above their means?
15) Detroit Tigers (21-21)
Detroit is starting their longest road trip of the season this week (11 games), and it could very well dictate the rest of the season. They also need to find something they do well that they can rely on - they're currently average in most categories.
14) Minnesota Twins (22-18)
The Twins have been surprisingly solid all season long, but still haven't proved they're for real. Like Detroit, there isn't any one particular thing they do well - just solid all across the board.
13) Boston Red Sox (22-21)
Boston has struggled to find consistency all season, though the numbers suggest things will start turning around soon. They rank in the top four in the league in batting average and on-base percentage, and are fifth in quality starts. At some point, they'll rip off a winning streak.
12) St. Louis Cardinals (22-19)
St. Louis has been getting great pitching on a daily basis - their offense has just been inconsistent. They have rebounded after a slow start and are in position to compete for a playoff spot.
11) Milwaukee Brewers (25-19)
Eric Thames has been perhaps the best story of the young MLB season, and he leads an exciting Milwaukee offense. However, their pitching leaves a little something to be desired.
10) Texas Rangers (24-21)
Here come the Rangers! A 10-game winning streak was snapped over the weekend, but it has put them above .500 for the first time all season. They're finally playing up to their potential.
9) Arizona Diamondbacks (26-19)
Most of Arizona's losses this season have come against good teams and won five of their six games this past week. It looks they'll be relevant for the rest of the season - for the first time in forever.
8) Cleveland Indians (23-19)
The Indians have won five of their last seven games, including a sweep over the Astros this weekend. Consistency has escaped them so far, but their hoping that sweep is a sign of things to come.
7) Chicago Cubs (22-20)
Yes, the Cubs haven't been the dominant team we all expected them to be. They have played arguably the toughest schedule in the league to this point, but pretty much everyone on their roster is also underachieving. Chicago still has plenty of time to get back on track, however.
6) Los Angeles Dodgers (26-19)
The Dodgers have the best run differential in the majors (+64) and are great at home. The problem is their struggles on the road (10-12).
5) Baltimore Orioles (25-17)
The Orioles had the best record in the majors not too long ago, but are 3-7 over their last 10 games. It appears to be just a small bump in the road for them, though they need to turn things around in a competitive AL East.
4) Colorado Rockies (28-17)
Colorado appears to be for real! There are reasons why they may regress - they have allowed the most runs of any team with a winning record - but their offense is legit and they keep finding ways to win games against quality competition.
3) Washington Nationals (26-17)
The Nationals still have bullpen concerns, but they have a seven-game lead in their division and a +41 run differential. They will not be challenged in the NL East.
2) New York Yankees (25-16)
New York's dream start continues, and they have been more impressive than any team in the MLB. They are second in the majors in run differential (+55) and are third in runs scored. Led by Aaron Judge's breakout season, the Yankees are a title threat once again.
1) Houston Astros (29-15)
Houston has the best record in the majors because they have been the most consistent and well-rounded team in the majors. They're among the two best teams in the league in ERA, WHIP and opponents batting average - showing the dominance of their pitching staff - and are in the top seven in every major hitting category.
