The MLB trade deadline on July 31st is rapidly approaching, and the trade rumors are starting to heat up. The All-Star game is one day away and there should only be more rumblings and buzz as we get closer to the deadline. Here are all the latest rumors and news from the hot stove.
Price For Starters Too High?
The starting pitching market appears to be overpriced, according to one scout who spoke with ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.
"You want to get a guy who'll pitch for you in the postseason," a scout for a contending club said. "Teams want to trade you a No. 5 starter who might help you get to the postseason."
Asking for more than a player might be worth and not parting with better players is a common theme. Things should level out closer to the deadline as both the buyers and sellers are more willing to deal.
Braves Trading Teheran?
One pitcher on the market is Julio Teheran, but it appears the Braves are an example of a team asking for too much. Jayson Stark spoke with one MLB executive about what the Braves are looking for.
One exec who has talked with the Braves on the likelihood they'll move Julio Teheran: "They will -- if they get what they're looking for." And what are they looking for? "Better than the Shelby Miller deal."
The Braves, somehow, netted Ender Inciarte and Top prospects Aaron Blair and Dansby Swanson in a deal with the Diamondbacks for Miller. Teheran is a better pitcher than Miller, posting a 2.96 ERA and a .969 WHIP, but the Braves might not be able to get a team to part with so much for Teheran, even if he is under team control through the 2020 season.
Yankees To Keep Beltran?
The Yankees could end up being sellers at the deadline, especially since they are 7.5 games back of the AL East lead. One player whose name has been brought up in rumors is OF Carlos Beltran. But the veteran OF might not end up on the move, reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Sherman reports the Yankees still think they are in the Wild Card race and aren't looking to deal Beltran.
Still, as of the conclusion of the first half, the Yanks were not offering their players in a significant way, meaning the most likely outcome for Beltran is to remain the Yankees’ third-place hitter and perhaps be given the qualifying offer after the season.
Sherman says a deep market for OFs, also hurts the Yankees chances of moving Beltran.
Teams Looking For Bullpen Help?
Starters aren't the only pitching help teams are looking for. Buster Olney of ESPN Insider reports the three most likely teams to make moves for bullpen help are the Nationals, Rangers and Giants. Olney doesn't reveal which players in particular those teams are targeting.
