The MLB season is roughly 40 games in, making it a perfect time to take a look at the American League MVP race with 25% of the season done. It's still very early but some of the big-name players like Mike Trout, Manny Machado, and Mookie Betts are leading the pack.
We've narrowed it down to the top five contenders for the AL MVP below. Here are our latest AL MVP Power Rankings:
5) Aaron Judge, RF, New York Yankees
Last year's AL Rookie of the Year makes the list. The Yankees have the best record in baseball and are tearing it up right now winning eight of their last 10 games. Judge slugged 11 home runs this season with 35 RBIs. He is top four in the MLB in On-Base plus Slugging percentage.
4) Francisco Lindor, SS, Cleveland Indians
Lindor has a 3.0 wins above replacement which is the second highest in the MLB and has the second highest defensive WAR. He is getting it done with the bat racking up 54 hits and scoring 35 runs both top three in the MLB. With Lindor's impressive play this season, it's a major reason why the Indians are leading their division.
3) Manny Machado, 3B, Baltimore Orioles
If the Orioles weren't struggling so badly, Machado might be higher on this list, but a 13-29 record never helps your MVP rankings. Machado is tied for the league lead in home runs with 13 and RBIs 38. He is tied for the second most total bases with 105 and hits with 55. Machado continues to be a solid player in the field and is tearing it up at the plate.
2) Mike Trout, CF, Los Angeles Angels
Trout is tearing up the league once again and leads all players in Wins Above Replacement (3.5). Trout continues to find his way on base leading the MLB with an on-base percentage of .449. Trout is getting it done with his bat and in the field, making him arguably the most complete player in the league.
1) Mookie Betts, OF, Boston Red Sox
Betts has been incredible this season for the Red Sox and is a major reason why Boston has one of the best records in the MLB at 28-14. Betts is batting .349 which is the third highest in the league, but his power is what has Beantown booming. He leads the league in slugging percentage (.740%), total bases (108), and home runs (13).
