The MLB Network will debut Statcast, a state-of-the-art tracking technology, tonight during their showcase game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Washington Nationals at 7:00 p.m. ET.
MLB.com says Statcast "collects data using a series of high-resolution optical cameras along with radar equipment that has been installed in all 30 Major League ballparks. The technology precisely tracks the location and movements of the ball and every player on the field at any given time."
The new technology will allow fans to see nuances of the game, like how fast the ball comes off of a hitter's bat for how much ground an outfielder covered before making a catch, in real time.
"Our hope is that this, for baseball, will be one of the largest advances in instant replay that we've seen in the last 50 years," said Bob Bowman, Major League Baseball's president of business and media.
Statcast is already being used by MLB front offices, and will be incorporated into every MLB Network Showcase game. It is expected to be available through additional broadcasts this season.
