3.) San Francisco Giants
The Giants are in the race for the free agent slugger, but likely won't be willing to spend in order to land him. Martinez would provide pop in the middle of the Giants order which is needed for them to compete in the National League. The Giants would likely go over the luxury tax if they sign Martinez who is looking for a long-term contract worth around $23 million a year. If the Giants are willing to go over the luxury tax, Martinez going to the Bay Area may be a possibility.
2.) Arizona Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks would love to re-sign Martinez, but it may not be possible if he is looking for a contract in the $200 million range. Even though the Diamondbacks don't have the same amount of money as the Red Sox, they may be able to satisfy Martinez's playing needs better. The Boston Herald reported on December 15, that Martinez prefers to play in the outfield rather than serve as a designated hitter. This may make Martinez stay in the National League.
1.) Boston Red Sox
All off-season all signs have pointed towards Martinez going to the Red Sox. According to Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald, the Red Sox are waiting to commit resources to fill team needs until free agent outfielder J.D. Martinez makes a decision on his future. Boston offered Martinez a five-year deal according to USA Today, but no details regarding that contract are available.
Martinez has been the apple of the Red Sox eye all off-season and Boston seems determined to land him.
