Football is great and all, but we don't ignore baseball just because the season is over. Luckily for us, there's always something to talk about in the MLB. Winter Meetings are over and a several big name free agents have signed, but there are still plenty of rumors. We're here to highlight the three most intriguing rumblings currently out there with the MLB Rumors You Need To Know For Dec. 14th:
Cardinals Not Pursuing Any Big Free Agents?
The Cardinals missed out on David Price and Jason Heyward this offseason and the club might elect to not sign any big-name players. General manager John Monzeliak told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the Cardinals won't make a "dynamic" signing.
"We still feel like from what we’ve been trying to do and been through this winter allows us ways to improve," Mozeliak said. "It’s clear now this offseason is not going to have that dynamic signing that we tried to do with Price and Heyward. There isn’t anything now that we’re chasing with a nine-figure contract. We can take the time to see what we have in the players we control. Obviously, we’re always open to adjusting."
That likely takes the Cardinals out of the running for bats like Chris Davis, Yoenis Cespedes and Alex Gordon.
Royals Hoping Gordon's Price Drops
Make no mistake, the Royals would love to bring back OF Alex Gordon. With the team is targeting a payroll similar to last season's, they may not be able to afford bringing back Gordon. But the Kansas City Star reports the Royals hope Gordon's price falls into their range. This is mostly speculation, but the Cardinals and San Francisco Giants were two of the biggest (rumored) contenders for Gordon's services. But with the Cardinals pulling themselves out of the running and the Giants giving Johnny Cueto a ton of money, both clubs are likely out of the running for Gordon. With several talented free agent OFs on the market, there's plenty of supply and limited demand. The Royals should be able to find a talented outfielder that fits their price range. And maybe, just maybe, it'll be Gordon.
Cubs Not Done Yet?
The Chicago Cubs have already made two massive moves this offseason, signing Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist. They might not be done yet. Joel Sherman of the New York Post expects the club to try to deal for a young starting pitcher. Sherman says Chicago could deal Jorge Soler (opening up right field for Heyward) and/or Javier Baez for a starter. He mentions the Indians' Carlos Carrasco and Danny Salazar, Tampa Bay’s Alex Cobb and Jake Odorizzi and San Diego’s Tyson Ross as potential options.
