Spurrier had brief but dramatic history vs. Mizzou

COLUMBIA, Mo. • Stephen Orr Spurrier’s history with the University of Missouri began long before the Tigers joined the Southeastern Conference. In one of Mizzou’s greatest bowl wins, Spurrier was deemed the most valuable player in a losing effort when the Tigers beat Florida 20-18 in the 1966 Sugar Bowl.

He wasn’t quite the Head Ball Coach yet — just the Head Ball Passer.

On Tuesday, Spurrier announced he was resigning midway through his 11th season as the head coach at South Carolina, effective immediately. Spurrier, 70, leaves the college game with a 228-89-2 overall record in 26 seasons at Duke, Florida and South Carolina.
