KETTERING, Ohio — At first, the idea might seem a bit, well, reckless: Task a 6-foot-8 forward to blitz Darryn Petersen, the nation’s No. 3 prospect, in a ball screen.
But it’s a job AZ Compass Prep’s Nicholas Randall tackled with gusto midway through the second quarter against Prolific Prep in a showcase showdown. Instead of switching a ball screen set on the empty side of the floor, Randall hopped out, slid with one of the country’s premier scorers, and rerouted him.
To shake free, Petersen reversed the ball to Joel Mokweza and sprinted into a handoff to attack the baseline.
