Today we’re talking about QR codes. If you hadn’t heard, the NCAA (yes, it’s still a thing, but barely) ruled that Oklahoma State can’t put QR codes on its players helmets as a form of advertisement for fans to donate to individual NIL collectives.
The NCAA ruled stickers on the helmets to be unpermitted “advertising or commercial marks” but will allow the same codes to be posted throughout the stadium and on players’ personal bags during the team’s walk through fans on the way to the stadium (think the Tiger Walk). So, a fan is breaking the rules by photographing a QR code on a helmet, but on a players’ gym bag it’s cool.
