When Barry Odom’s younger brother Brian left the staff this past offseason to coach at Oklahoma, Odom went out and hired a veteran assistant with a strong track record for creating turnovers. As the coordinator at Houston and Texas Tech the last six seasons, David Gibbs oversaw defenses that specialized in handing the ball back to the offense by any means necessary.
Through spring drills and four days of preseason camp, Odom said Monday he’s never been around a coach who preaches takeaways as much as his new cornerbacks coach. Gibbs has taught his players new techniques to create turnovers but also believes in talking the game-changing plays into existence.
