COLUMBIA, MO.• Derek Dooley doesn’t need a history book or Wikipedia to brush up on Georgia football. Missouri’s offensive coordinator grew up with the most famous last name in Athens, Ga.
The son of legendary Georgia coach Vince Dooley, Derek was 12 years old when his dad’s team captured the 1980 national championship.
Dooley’s ties to UGA run deep. After leaving law school in the 1990s, Dooley parlayed his connections into a job on the Georgia coaching staff as a graduate assistant. That’s when he first met Kirby Smart, then a sophomore defensive back for the Bulldogs.
