NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Missouri linebackers coach DJ Smith is departing to become Appalachian State's defensive coordinator, according to multiple reports.
That Smith is taking a coordinator position at his alma mater is not especially surprising, though the timing — with the news of his departure coming out the night before the Tigers play in the Music City Bowl on Monday — and task of replacing a highly regarded assistant will be challenges.
FootballScoop first reported App State's plan to hire Smith.
Because Smith is leaving MU to take a coordinator position, he will not owe the school a buyout, according to the terms of his contract.
