Missouri lawmakers revise state's NIL law, expand college coaches' role in negotiations

The budding business of name, image and likeness compensation for college athletes continues to evolve in the state of Missouri.

Under a newly passed amendment by the state Legislature, college coaches in Missouri can be more actively involved with their athletes and recruits who are negotiating contracts to profit off their name, image and likeness. The changes don’t stop there. The state’s refreshed NIL law now will allow in-state high school recruits to start earning endorsement money as soon as they sign with in-state colleges, pending Gov. Mike Parson’s signature in the coming weeks.

During Tuesday’s legislative session in Jefferson City, the House passed House Bill 417, which included an amendment to a Senate bill that updates language for the state’s bipartisan NIL law that was initially passed in the summer of 2021.
