COLUMBIA, Mo. — Just as the football slipped from his right hand, Nathaniel Peat’s homecoming season soon followed. Four games into what he hoped would be a breakthrough season with his hometown team began to crumble at Auburn's Jordan-Hare Stadium last Sept. 24.
Peat, Mizzou’s senior running back and a crucial transfer portal addition, had put together the game that would vault him into the lead back role he craved when he left Stanford for home. In a slugfest at Auburn, where first downs, much less touchdowns, were scarce for both teams, Peat jogged toward the end zone on MU’s first snap of overtime, slipping through three tackles on his way to scoring the dramatic game-winner.
