Don’t be shocked by this latest drama with University of Missouri athletics.
Academic fraud is nothing unusual in the big-money college sports. The whole “student-athlete” charade proves tricky when key performers don’t even pretend to care about their schooling.
Occasionally the farce is exposed — such as at Notre Dame, where a student-trainer got carried away helping football players stay eligible — and the NCAA issues harsh punishments to protect its image, such as it is.
Now it is Mizzou’s turn.
Athletics tutor Yolanda Kumar admitted participating in academic fraud on behalf of athletes, particularly the football and men’s basketball teams.
