Frank Broyles, who guided the University of Arkansas to its lone national football championship and later molded the overall program as its athletic director, died Monday at the age of 92.
Broyles died from complications of Alzheimer’s disease, according to a statement from his family. “He passed peacefully in his home surrounded by his loved ones,” the statement said.
Prior to a 52-year career with the Razorbacks, Broyles coached one season at Missouri, guiding the Tigers to a 5-4-1 record and integrating the program by recruiting running backs Norris Stevenson and Mel West.
Former Tigers football coach-turned-athletic director Don Faurot had instituted “The Missouri Plan,” which limited recruiting to in-state.
