Former Mizzou player upset COA stipend was used to settle bookstore debt

The most useful lessons learned in college often occur outside of the classroom. Finding an apartment, doing laundry, managing a schedule – all of these things, and dozens more, are valuable experiences to be gained on campus which many students haven’t had on arrival.

Dealing with debt is another.

In a Kansas City Star article Sunday about the first year of student-athletes’ new cost-of-attendance stipend, former Missouri defensive back Ian Simon was one player who expressed his dismay due to one incident he had that resulted because of it. Simon, a three-year starter for the Tigers, said he had a portion of his COA check held back to satisfy an outstanding debt incurred at the student bookstore.
